Our Story
We've been building biochar since April 2009 when the late Jeff Moxham taught us how to do it in a workshop. In the years since then we have done lots of feedstock experiments, plant growth trials and food yield trials with many accidental discoveries along the way.
In 2011 we created a biochar unit- called the Moxham burner utilising industrial waste steel pipes the height and width of person.
By learning manual fire tending- which we also call a “char-mastership” we have learnt the correct way to run this high volume burner to make it the best biochar unit in the home-made category.
We have had an independent review and examination of our products by Black is Green P/L a proprietary pyrolysis manufacturing company which sent their chief chemist and their chief engineers. The scientific evaluations found that we have the lowest polluting biochar machine they've ever seen and that the biochar that we create from it is the highest quality of biochar they have ever rated.
We have since been contracted by Black is Green to supply biochar to them.
This biochar is now used by Diggers Club (Australia), an expert gardening club. Diggers are sending out biochar all around Australia so we've been chosen by that company as the highest quality supplier that they could find.
By buying directly from us, the manufacturers, you know that you are getting the highest quality biochar without paying the highest premium. By getting it straight from the manufacturer.
You can download the scientific study commissioned by Black is Green. The 15 page report explains our biochar burning system and also the analysis of our char, including the emissions from our operation.
We have implemented quality control systems for selecting our burning feedstock to ensure no foreign material such as nails or other contaminants gets into the biochar. Black is Green have conducted audits of our biochar processing on three occasions.
When you purchase biochar from Biochar Industries you are investing in products that are using plantation timbers and are sequestering carbon back into the soil once used- applying one of the grand principles of permaculture by taking any surplus and investing it back into the planet.
Everything we do goes back into biochar research. All hardwood burned comes from sustainably managed holistic plantations near Mt Warning, NSW. We use low impact methods, selecting each tree and felling by hand not by bulldozers or clear-felling for instance.
Biochar industries is a social enterprise, our idea was to be able to get people who are not completely addicted to the system but are happy to learn about preparing for self preservation, self-reliance, self-sufficiency or even just to be a little bit more greener on the planet to be able to have somewhere they can work.
The holistic principles of Biochar Industries are based on cradle to grave- what we look at is absolutely everything we try and do our best in every area. We see ourselves as a benchmark for the biochar Industry we employ green tech such as using waste vegetable oil in our truck- giving 139% better emissions. We use older trucks because we can repair them ourselves, we run second-hand tyres that still have life in them- it makes for a very economical way of running a green industry.
